Consistency and persistence is another important factor when you begin dog obedience training. Chances are, your dog is not going to learn their new behavior overnight. It will take time for them to properly learn what you are trying to teach them, and it is up to you to remain consistent and persistent during that time. Just because your dog doesn’t learn their new behaviors in a single day does not mean they are a hopeless case. Dog obedience training should begin as soon as your new friend comes home. While it may be tempting to just enjoy those first few days by letting your puppy play and do what it wants, you are actually encouraging bad behavior by doing so. After that, you also need to start teaching your puppy or dog that jumping, biting, chewing and running away are not good behavior.

Dogs are pack creatures, so in order for your training to be effective you must immediately establish yourself as the leader of the pack. That is not to say that as soon as your puppy comes home you should turn your home into a boot camp with constant training and behavior modification, but you do need to take control from the beginning. It is perfectly fine and in fact encouraged to spend plenty of time playing and loving your puppy, but you also need to establish who is boss.

Ideally, you should read and learn some dog obedience training material before you bring your puppy or new dog home for the first time. However, if you found your new furry friend in a spur of the moment and are now sitting and looking for training techniques with him sitting right beside you, there is still hope. Just remember, the most important thing you can do is establish yourself as the pack leader from the beginning, and remain consistent in the training that you give them.
