Crate Training Your Dog - Why is it Important?   

Some people view crate training as the next best thing since sliced bread. Others view crate training as an inhumane treatment of their pets. While there are some cases where crate training might be used inappropriately and can in fact be inhumane, when used correctly crate training is invaluable and can provide a safe environment for your dog.  

Crate training is important because it helps to provide a stable method of training that is effective and humane, as long as it is used correctly. Crating your dog is not meant to be used as a way to simply get your dog out of your hair when you don’t want it around. A crate is not meant to be used as a place for you to lock your puppy or dog for hours on end, only letting it out when you desire to give it attention. Yes, a crate can be used effectively to keep your puppy out of trouble when you are unable to watch what they are doing, but it should not be used excessively.  

When used correctly, there are a number of benefits to crate training. Using a crate can be an effective way of potty training your potty, and teach them when it is not appropriate to use the bathroom in the house. Crating your dog when you are unable to keep an eye on them will help to prevent them from getting into trouble while you are away, and keep them out of things that can harm them. Crate training will also provide a safe place for your dog, that gives them their own sense of comfort.

Dogs are “den” animals by nature. Having a den makes them feel very confident and secure. Using a crate correctly provides them with their “den” and once they become used to going there, they will be more than happy to go to their crate when directed. This safe space also proves to be beneficial to your pet when they are faced with situations that make them uncomfortable. Many dogs will go to their crate on their own if they are faced with something that makes them insecure, because they know that their crate is their safe zone.  

Crate training is also important because of the boundaries that it establishes for your pet. While the crate should never be used as a method of punishment for bad behavior, using a crate will set boundaries for your pet and promote good behavior. When you crate your dog while you are not home, it teaches them where they need to be when you are away. In some cases, your dog may become so accustomed and happy with being in their crate while you are away, they will naturally start to go there when you are not home whether you lock them in their crate or not.  

Though the community of dog owners is divided on whether or not crate training should be used to train your pet, the fact of the matter is that it is very effective and humane when used correctly. You should make sure that you purchase a quality crate that is neither too large nor too small for your pet, and make sure that you do not over-use the crate. Using the crate when necessary however, will help result in a well-trained puppy or dog that you will be very happy with.
