How to Stop Your Dog From
Barking
Barking is a natural
behavior of dogs and the method that use to communicate
with one another and their humans, but sometimes their
barking can get quite out of control. If you are looking
to get your dog to stop barking completely, there is a
chance that having a dog as a pet is not the right choice
for you. However, if you are able to accept a reasonable
amount of barking and are hoping to stop problem barking,
there are a variety of options open to
you.
Problem
barking is categorized as barking that goes on continuously for
more than 20-30 minutes. This type of barking not only will
become a nuisance to you quite quickly, but to your neighbors
and those around you as well. Problem barking occurs for a
variety of reasons including attention, loneliness, boredom, or
as some type of alert that there is another dog or a strange
person nearby.

The first
step in getting your dog to stop problem barking is to
determine what the cause of the bark actually is. If your dog
is an outside dog that is continuously barking, he may be
barking out of loneliness or sheer boredom. While many people
believe that dogs are simply meant to be outside pets and
should be more than happy outside, dogs are also pack
creatures. It is in their nature to want companionship, and if
they are left outside most of the time by themselves, they may
be barking to try and get your attention.
If this is
the cause of your dog barking, try spending more time with your
dog. Bring him inside more often so that he can enjoy
companionship. If bringing him inside is not an option, spend
more time outside with your dog playing with him and showing
him affection. Once he learns that when you come home you will
be coming to play with him, he will more than likely stop
barking continuously just to try and get you to come
play.
Boredom
barking is also easily dealt with. Dogs often bark when they
are bored to try and get someone to come and play with them,
whether they are outdoors or indoors. If you get complaints
from your neighbors that your dog is barking all day and your
dog stays inside, there are a few things you can try. Find toys
that are entertaining and time consuming, such as those toys
that you can stuff with treats and food. You can also try
leaving the television or radio on, which will help your dog
feel a sense of companionship. Finally, you can try crate
training your dog so that they learn that while they are in the
crate, that type of behavior is not
acceptable.
If you are
having problems with alert barking, you will really need to
evaluate the situation to determine what to do. Alert barking
is not always a bad thing, and discouraging that type of
behavior may pose problems in the long run. If you have no
desire at all for your dog to be a guard dog, then you will
have to teach your dog using stop commands to not bark when
they are alerted to something. Otherwise, you may want to try
training your dog that a few barks to alert you is acceptable,
but that once you acknowledge the alert, they are supposed to
stop.
