How to Stop Your Dog From
Whining
Having a dog that
whines can almost be worse than having a dog that barks.
For many people, whining is more irritating than any other
dog behavior. In the wild, whining is a natural trait in
pups that allows them to tell their mother that something
is wrong so that she can give them attention. However, in
the wild this trait is lost when the dog
matures.
Domesticated dogs on the other hand, having
taken to whining clear into adulthood as a means to get
their owners to give them what they want. The whining and
other sounds that an adult dog makes are purely for our
benefit and attention. Dog owners must do the same thing
the wild dog mother will do, and put a stop to dog
whining early on in the puppies’ life.
Determining the
Cause
Most of the time, a puppy or dog will whine
for a reason. They are whining because they want
something from you. By determining what the cause for the
whine is, you will be better suited in helping to stop
the behavior all together. Common reasons a dog whines
are that you have something that it wants such as food,
the dog is upset because it is not in the same room as
you and because the dog needs to go outside to use the
bathroom.
There are however other reasons that a dog
may be whining. If your dog is whining while it is eating
its food or going to the bathroom, or whining for no
apparent reason, this may be an indicator that something
is wrong with the dog. Whining can also be a sign that
your dog is in pain, so if any of these above issues seem
to cause your dog to whine you should immediately
schedule an appointment with your veterinarian to have
them checked out.

How to Stop
Whining
The best way to stop whining is to treat
your dog as a child that is doing something wrong. Do not
give in to this attention seeking behavior and give the
dog what it wants. If you are eating something that the
dog wants and it is whining for your food, give the dog
several different training commands to break their
attention from your food, such as sit, lay down, stay,
etc. If the dog responds to your command, reward the dog
with an appropriate dog treat, not your food.
If your dog is whining because they want to
be with you, this may be a sign that you are not giving
enough attention to your dog or that your dog has a fear
of abandonment. The best way to stop whining in this
situation is to help your dog to feel more comfortable
when it is alone. Start by spending some time with your
dog, then leave it by itself for a short period of time.
When you leave the room, do not immediately return if the
dog starts whining. If he does start whining, respond
with a firm no and leave the dog alone for a short
period. If the whining stops, give it a few minutes and
then return to the dog to praise him for his good
behavior. If it does not stop, return to the room after a
short period and start the process over.
Each time you leave the room and receive
good behavior from your dog, repeat the process leaving
him for longer periods of time. Before you know it, you
will be able to leave with your dog being comfortable,
knowing that you will return so he has no reason to whine
at your departure. If you give in to your dog and return
immediately every time it starts to whine, you are
actually encouraging the behavior and giving in to the
guilt trip that they are giving you. Let your dog know
that you are the dominant partner in the pair, and in no
time at all they will behave in the appropriate
manner.
